Waterborne binders as the basis for wood coatings, architectural paints and industrial applications — bio-based grades available.
The binder decides almost everything the customer ends up judging: hardness, flexibility, adhesion, resistance, yellowing, gloss. Waterborne dispersions form their film by water evaporating and polymer particles coalescing — what they gain in environmental profile they demand back in care over film formation and drying conditions.
In practice the route runs via the minimum film-forming temperature and the coalescent content required — and therefore straight to the VOC balance of the formulation. Pure acrylics, styrene acrylics and polyurethane dispersions set their priorities differently, from weathering through block resistance to chemical resistance. Bio-based grades are available where a sustainability claim is part of the requirement.
What matters when choosing
Minimum film-forming temperature and coalescent demand — the lever for the VOC balance
Weigh hardness against flexibility, depending on substrate and exposure
Block resistance where coated parts are stacked or closed
Yellowing tendency in light and white systems
Chemical and wet-scrub resistance of the target standard
Bio-based content where it has to be declared
