Paper is coated at web speeds of many hundred metres per minute — foam in the coating colour instantly becomes a runnability problem, and every wetting defect shows in the coating. Alongside the classic coating colour, functional coatings are growing: water and grease barriers replacing film lamination, heat-sealable layers, rub-resistant surfaces for packaging papers.
